Bootlegger (2021) Review
Honesty drama from POV Mani
Monnet’s directing, which is his first feature-length feature film debut, is quite light with only focusing on Mani’s small family and community groups which are the center of his scientific studies. But the field problem with theoretical research is not the same. Little things involving Mani become a wall big enough for Mani to fight alone for his place to live.
Everything was conveyed clearly, showing goodwill and empathy from the bottom of Mani’s heart. But again, hardness of heart in each interest group became the main obstacle for the main problems of the 2 camps.
Plot complementary characters
The main character Mani is in the spotlight, helped by light characters who turn out to be related to Mani’s past. Mani uncovers many memories of himself before leaving for education.
It was also Mani’s thoughts to move forward and strive for his main goal of returning to where he came from. Familiarity that arises from every corner of a small town, seen the struggle of small groups who find it difficult to find a middle ground with the regulators.
Slow pacing between light dialogues
There are not many dialogues that make us think hard. Conflicts that may exist in several parts of the region make the scenarios not exhaustive in discussing the scope of detail. Featured with scene switching and focus making the flow slower and easier to follow.
Conclusion Bootlegger
Bootlegger explores the drama of social life in the city where Mani comes from with such lightness. The focus on the main character does not diminish the supporting role that indirectly carries out the story and helps Mani in assembling the puzzle that was presented so randomly to us from the start. The background of the northern region of Quebec witnessed Mani’s internal conflict influencing his external mission to find a middle ground for problems in society.
